Intervention Classes

Kennett Middle School's intervention class program provides a continuum of supports to address the diverse learning needs of students. These classes serve as a bridge, offering tailored instruction and targeted interventions. The program caters to a broad range of needs, from closing skills deficits to providing extension and enrichment opportunities. By adapting to each student's needs, the intervention program ensures all receive the support necessary to reach their full potential.

Classes

Executive Functioning Development

This special education class meets 1, 2, or 3 times per 3-day cycle week and is
dedicated to cultivating executive functioning skills essential for academic success and
lifelong achievement. The curriculum emphasizes strategy instruction in goal setting,
cognitive flexibility, organization and prioritization, memorization, and self-checking and
monitoring. Enrollment is reserved for students with identified educational needs
related to executive functioning skills.

Social and Emotional Skill Development

This special education class meets 1, 2, or 3 times per 3-day cycle week and is
designed to foster social skills acquisition and their application across diverse settings
to facilitate positive post-school outcomes. Instruction centers on enhancing self-
awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills, and responsible
decision-making. Enrollment is restricted to students with identified educational
needs in these social-emotional competencies.

Social Behavior and Social Understanding

This special education class caters to students eligible for Special Education (SE)
services under the Autism category, whether primary or secondary. The curriculum
concentrates on honing skills associated with executive functioning and social-
emotional development, employing evidence-based practices tailored to the needs of
students with Autism. The class meets 2 or 3 times per 3-day cycle week.

Reading Foundations I

This supplemental English class meets daily for a standard period. Students receive
structured, systematic, multisensory reading intervention to address deficits in
foundational reading skills (phonemic awareness, basic phonics skills reading skills,
reading and writing fluency). This class must be taken concurrently with a general
education English Language Arts class or Modified ELA 6 and is instructed by a special
education teacher or reading specialist. (Sonday System 1)

Reading Foundations II

This supplemental English class meets daily for a standard period. Students receive
structured, systematic, multisensory reading intervention to address deficits in
intermediate reading skills (multi-syllabic decoding, vocabulary, and comprehension).
This class must be taken concurrently with a general education English Language Arts
class or Modified ELA 6 and is instructed by a special education teacher or reading
specialist. (Sonday System 2)
