Summer Reading 2025
Nothing fosters a culture of readers like the power of choice. With that in mind, our goal for summer reading is for students to explore new genres and authors by picking novels that truly interest them. Regardless of what level Language Arts you are taking next year, you are expected to read a minimum of two novels that are sufficiently challenging to you as a reader.
Each packet contains suggested titles as well as ways to find books that you can enjoy!
All grades should be prepared to work in small group discussions and complete in-class writing activities related to your novels at the start of the school year. For those entering grade 6, please complete the Summer Reading Graphic Organizer as carefully and neatly as you can.

Why Summer Reading?
Summer reading is crucial for students because it helps prevent summer learning loss, known as the "summer slide," where students can regress in their reading and other academic skills during the break.
Engaging in reading over the summer reinforces and expands on what students have learned in the classroom, ensuring they start the next school year with a strong foundation.
Here's a more detailed look at why summer reading is important:
Preventing Summer Learning Loss:
Research indicates that children who don't read over the summer can lose up to three months of reading comprehension. Summer reading helps maintain and improve literacy skills, ensuring students are ready to learn in the fall.
Building Strong Readers:
Reading regularly, especially reading a variety of materials, helps students build phonics skills, fluency, and vocabulary.
Expanding Knowledge and Imagination:
Summer reading allows students to explore new worlds, cultures, and ideas, stimulating their imagination and expanding their knowledge base.
Encouraging a Lifelong Love of Reading:
Summer reading programs can help students develop a love for reading and make it a lifelong habit.
Strengthening Parent-Child Bonds:
Shared reading time creates opportunities for families to connect, discuss stories, and enjoy the joy of reading together.
Improving Social-Emotional Learning:
Reading can help students develop empathy, understand different perspectives, and build their social-emotional skills.
Providing a Fun and Educational Summer Activity:
Summer reading programs can provide a balance of fun and educational activities, keeping students engaged and entertained throughout the summer.
Supporting Students at Risk:
Summer reading can be particularly important for students who struggle with reading, helping them catch up and improve their skills.
Bridging the Achievement Gap:
Summer reading can help reduce the achievement gap between struggling and successful readers, as lower-achieving students are less likely to read out of school.
