Arts

This page is the home for the arts at KMS.  More content will be shared in the weeks and months ahead!

As part of our Cycles classes, as well as extracurricular activities, students at KMS have the opportunity to develop their artistic talents while enjoying connection with others who have similar interests.  A student may enjoy an ensemble after school or simply having a choice for grade 6 music (Choral Music, General Music, Instrumental Music).  They may audition for the annual musical or take additional Cycle classes in Drawing or Ceramics in grade 8.  They might choose chorus or band or orchestra as they enter middle school with a goal of participating in district, regional, and state opportunities in high school!

We take pride in offering our students opportunities to learn and develop and share their talents.

Families should review Cycle opportunities detailed in the Academics section of this website as their student moves through KMS as well as encourage their child to participate in extracurricular opportunities in the arts.

Art and Design

The basic elements and principles of Art and Design are introduced in a way that builds upon skills learned each year. Students work with a variety of materials in both 2D and 3D formats (drawing, painting, ceramics, etc.) and are instructed in proper usage of the tools and materials.

Sketchbook are used each year to build a portfolio of student work as well as observational drawing which allow students to practice drawing skills to gain understanding of proportion, visual measurements, drawing the human figure and drawing from real life.  In 8th Grade, students will have two (2) Art options which are Ceramic Studio and Studio Drawing and Painting.

Community Events and Outreach

The Art Department is active in the community as well.  We work with The Kennett Food Bank, Lion’s Club, Longwood Gardens and The Brandywine River Museum.
