After-The-Bell is a unique after-school program for the students of Kennett Middle School. The program is provided by the Kennett After-School Association and was founded in 1998. After-The-Bell provides a safe and healthy environment for students from 2:45pm to 5:25pm on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays during the school year.
The program operates on three six-week cycles per school year; fall, winter and spring. In a typical cycle, students choose one or two activities from a catalog of 60 – 70 choices. An emphasis is placed on offering activities requested by the students. Activities offered are varied, ranging from study hall to the arts, crafts, sports, computer science, language (Japanese, Spanish, and Italian), classes at local nature center, and even the opportunity to develop and run a small business.
With over 200 volunteers sharing their time and interests with middle school students, After-The-Bell provides an opportunity for intergenerational interactions that promote character development. The enriching experiences of After-The-Bell provide positive social interaction, and improved academic achievement.
