Students Help Community in Honor of Martin Luther King, Jr.

Kennett Middle School students honored Martin Luther King, Jr. and his legacy this past week by participating in a community building event. In celebration of Martin Luther King Day of Service, the Student Council organized a school-wide Penny War. Sixth, seventh and eighth grade students competed against one other to collect the most change to benefit Change for Change. Change for Change is a district-wide initiative to make a difference in the lives of local community members. In total, Kennett Middle School raised over $400. All donations will benefit the Kennett Food Cupboard.

Art Class at Kennett Middle School

Every marking period students at Kennett Middle School have a live animal visit the Drawing Lab. This lesson allows students to put into practice the observational drawing skills that they have been working on. Drawing from observation (rather than from a photograph) helps to develop critical thinking skills, as well as gives the students an opportunity to draw an interesting and unique animal. Students have drawn goats, mini ponies, a calf, chickens, a parrot, a pig, rats, quails, rabbits, and most recently, pigeons and a chinchilla.

How exciting we have no school on Monday. The Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday celebrates the life and legacy of a man who brought hope and healing to America. We commemorate as well the timeless values he taught us through his example — the values of courage, truth, justice, compassion, dignity, humility and service that defined Dr. King’s character and empowered his leadership. On this holiday, we celebrate unconditional love, forgiveness and nonviolence that empowered his revolutionary spirit.

Please stay tuned for Flocabulary Friday.
