Pedometers in PE Class

Research shows that active students are better learners. With that in mind, teachers at Kennett Middle School are constantly looking for ways to motivate our students to be more active during PE class and in their lives. Last year, we acquired a tool to assist in that goal … pedometers. Through a Kennett Education Foundation grant, we were able to purchase a class set which allows each student to have their own pedometer during class.

Why pedometers? They are relatively inexpensive and easy to use. Also, the pedometers measure steps taken, activity time and MVPA (moderate to vigorous physical activity). With the use of the pedometers, students:

  • are empowered with the instant feedback from the pedometer.
  • can set goals, see if they are achieved and reflect upon the results.
  • receive very accurate and reliable data helping motivate students.
  • understand what intensity levels they are moving at.
  • personalize their MVPA threshold each class, allowing for more success.

For the PE Department, it allows us to analyze student and class activity time immediately to determine if students are really moving. It gives concrete data which is helpful in monitoring and accessing students. All in all, they have been a welcomed addition to the gym.
