KMS Library Celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month

Kennett Middle School Library has been celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month. Books about different Hispanic countries, cultures, and food have been displayed for students to explore and check out. Fiction books starring a Hispanic protagonist have also been featured. When visiting the library with classes, students watched a video of some of their favorite Disney actors talking about their Hispanic heritage. After the video, students with Hispanic heritage were encouraged to place a dot on the city and country on the appropriate map displayed in the hallway to represent where their families are from. It has been a great experience for students to get to know each other more personally and students have enjoyed participating in the Hispanic Heritage Month activities.

The Power of Positivity

At KMS the girl’s locker room is filled with quotes and positive statements. We often call out, “We are women who can!” Every direction you look you will find encouraging statements. We come into this space and regroup and think positively! It is a very happy environment meant to be positive and supportive. The first picture is what the girls face when they walk into the room, “Hello Beautiful.” The girls love it!

Have a great day KMS!!

Good morning KMS, it’s time for MINDFUL MONDAY! Last week we learned that being mindful is the practice of being in the moment or paying attention to the HERE and NOW and we learned the mindfulness strategy of 3×3 to help us let go of the past or future worries.

Research shows that just by slowing down your breathing can have a powerful effect on relieving stress. When your breathing slows down, so does your heart rate, your muscles relax, and more oxygen gets delivered to your brain.

One thing we can control in most all situations even when situations around us may be stressful is our breathing.

This next mindfulness practice will help you learn to take slow deep breaths any time you feel worry or stress. It’s called 4…3…2…1 (similar to last weeks practice but with breathing this time)

Sitting quietly, use your senses and notice things around you

4 things you can see

3 things you can feel

2 things you can hear

And finally, let’s all take

1 breath together and inhale deeply for 4 seconds, 4…3…2…1 and exhale 4…3…2…1

Also, this is another reminder for KMS students who are interested in the opportunity to become more mindful during their school days. KMS is offering a Mindfulness for Middle Schoolers Workshop, an 8 week, Stress Reduction Series. It just might help you stress less!

Remember, if you’re interested, please sign up in the Counseling Department office. Once signed up, your school counselor will reach out to you with more information. Hope you all consider signing up for this worthy series!

Take care of yourself and peace out KMS!
