KMS joins Patton Middle School for STEM

Our middle school students were invited to participate in a STEM-focused event at Patton Middle School. Hosted by a local chemical engineering company, Chemours, students had the chance to experience a day full of activities, interaction with robots, and time spent with local STEM-based companies. This year’s event centered around the theme of sustainability. Students from Kennett, Unionville, and Avon Grove started the day by interacting with a presentation from a Chemours engineer and Kennett parent, Mrs. Kathleen O’Keefe. As she introduced the theme of the day, students learned about their own environmental footprint, the needs of our current earth, and what the Chemours company is working on to help with these daily impacts. After the introduction, students moved to engage in a variety of hands-on projects. The sustainability-themed projects ranged from creating a small recycling-sorter out of cups and paper plates to developing a water filtration prototype to creating a paper windmill. Students could also explore the different robots developed by Unionville’s high school FTC Robotics team and our very own Kennett High School Blue Demon FRC Robotics team. After lunch was provided, local STEM category companies showcased what they do on a daily basis. Students used a “passport” to check off their visits to each company as they toured the “company expo”.

We look forward to next year’s event and what it may provide for our students!

TCHS & Franklin Mint

On Friday, February 21, our eighth-grade students had the opportunity to tour the Chester Country Technical College High School (TCHS). The students were greeted by students and staff in the school cafeteria before exploring the various course options that TCHS has to offer. Students were given hands-on experience with everything from cosmetology to auto repair and everything in between. A good day was had by all and that wasn’t even the half of it.

The other half of the day, the 8th grade was fortunate enough to receive financial literacy training from the Franklin Mint. By providing real-world examples, students garnered a new understanding and appreciation for the intricacies of sustaining a personal budget. It was a rewarding day that will certainly serve all of our students well as they head into the future.
